What are the Essentials I Need for My Summer Camping Trip?

Every year about this time, the cars are being packed and readied for that all inclusive summer trip the whole family will enjoy. Camping is, of course, one of my favorite pastimes and a vacation I would recommend for any family. There’s something about getting away from all the gizmos and gadgets that brings families together and sets you up for some really great memories.

We all have different ideas of getting in touch with nature. In fact, the word camping itself means different things to different people. Some people insist on sleeping on the ground, in their sleeping bag, inside of a tent made for two…or ten. Some people wouldn’t dream of a camping trip without their pop up tent or full on motor home. The main point seems to be that of comfort. And since we all experience comfort at a different level, this is purely subjective.

In order for your summer camping vacation to go smoothly, you want to be sure and pack wisely those creature comforts you cannot live without; remembering the essentials that will keep you and the kids happy and healthy in your home away from home. Here is a short list of the items you can include in your camping gear this year.

Shelter

Many people do choose to rough it under the stars. In order to plan right, you need to decide what type of shelter best suits your needs. Coleman makes some incredibly comfortable camping tents that fit anywhere from two to ten people with ease. You just need to decide how many people you want to house under one tent roof. I like nice big camping tents because you can stand up in them; which makes them second as a very nice dressing room.

Sleeping Gear

Especially if you do plan to sleep on the ground, you will want to have a stellar piece of sleeping gear. Some people are quite comfortable in their sleeping bag alone; but most of us do sleep better with a little more cushioning under our aging bones. There is the standard air mattress; but some people find that the air leaks out and they are left with a lopsided bed (especially when the bed is shared). What I like are the self inflating ground pads. These are compact and they do not require that you also lug along a pump in your already stuffed car.

Lighting

It is not typical for any campground to come fully equipped with the niceties of home, such as lighting. For this reason, it is important that you have great lanterns and lighting to get you through your trip. I always recommend taking at least two lanterns and two flashlights. In addition to lighting, be sure to pack plenty of batteries to keep your campsite well lit throughout your trip.

To make your camping trip enjoyable and hassle free, you need small items such as an ax (for cutting firewood), a hammer (for pounding in tent stakes), pots and pans and utensils and of course a deck of cards. Bug spray and a first aid kit also need to be packed just in case. Better safe than sorry!
