People ask me all the time, what food should I pack for my camping trip? This is a very valid question! We’ve already covered that space is limited cause of the camping gear when you are traveling by car to your camping destination. It should also be noted that the stores in the area of your campground may have limited supplies and may just rack up some of the prices for items you need the most. So I say, planning a great menu that is travel friendly is the best way to go. Sure, it will take up some space in your car aside your camping gear; but you will be happy to have a better selection of food on a smaller budget when you shop at your local store before you head off for the great outdoors.
Camping is all about getting out and about. Most of the camping trips I have been on include a hike or two. The point is, there may be days that you spend completely away from your campsite. When this is part of your trip, you need food that is compact but also packs a punch – of nutrients, that is. Protein bars are great for any camping trip. Bars that are lower in sugar and higher in protein are best. Depending on where you are going and how hot your day trips may get, you will want to plan protein bars that do not have a coating that will melt. The last thing you want is to have sticky hands for your entire hike!
Dried fruits and nuts are also great camping foods, because they can be grabbed quickly and enjoyed at your campsite or on the road (or trail). You could even go so far as to create your own trail mix made of your favorite dried fruits, nuts, and candy such as yogurt chips or chocolate chips, or M&Ms.
Milk can be a strange thing when it comes to camping. It isn’t easy to travel with a gallon jug of milk in the car. This is why evaporated milk is a great camping essential. You may not have even known that this item can be reconstituted at a 1:1 ratio! A few cans of evaporated milk, and you’ve gained a great deal of uses from hot drinks to cereal to oatmeal.
Drink packets may not be on your everyday grocery list; but when you are headed out to the mountains or beach for camping, these small packets are far easier to travel with than boxes or containers of juice. They also have a longer shelf life, which makes them ideal for long trips. You don’t have to worry about drinks going bad; and don’t have to mix more than you need at one time.
Just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean you want to eat poorly the entire time. Taking some fresh fruits that have a longer life, like oranges, apples and maybe some bananas is a way to eat well while away from home. Dried fruits keep well, but many contain high amounts of sugar that fresh fruits don’t have. Cheese is also a must have. This food is enjoyable, flavorful and full of protein!
