School Cheer Leading Or All Star Cheer Leading: Which One Should You Choose?

Many young, active and energetic girls of our generation dream of joining a cheerleading squad. Whenever they watch the TV and see their favorite squad perform and do complex stunts, elite cheer and dance, they wish that someday, they’ll also be able to do those things and be part of a cheering squad. As they reach adolescence, the options on which cheer group to join becomes clear: they could either join their school’s cheerleading squad, or an all star cheerleading team in the area. Both groups have their benefits and advantages, and you should think carefully which one you should join and contribute your talents to.

In a school cheer squad, before you get accepted, you might be asked to go through a number of steps or examinations: to test your physical abilities, and emotional as well, if your heart is really into cheering. Once you pass the auditions, you can observe first the cheer squad’s basic routines, and then join in later when you’ve adjusted and ready to show off your talents. Joining a school cheerleading squad will not cost you anything, except your dedication, which includes sacrificing your time when need for it arises. And once you’re in, you’ll get to meet your other schoolmates, and make new friends in the process.

If your school or university is known for its cheerleading squad, and joins competitions, you’re probably in luck because the school gives out a certain fund in training its squad members, and takes care of the fees in competitions. Although the auditions might be fiercer because only the best of the best will be accepted, you’ll get to experience a lot of new things and enjoy benefits once you’re inside the squad. But be ready for late night practices, constant nagging from your trainers and captain, and intense training as you are preparing for competition, and losing is just not an option.

All star cheerleading is a bit different from school cheerleading, because they mostly accept those interested individuals who are not part of any school squad, or still lacks the talent they need to qualify in one, and are interested in training to be one great cheerleader soon. Training starts in kids as young as 5 years, who show interest in learning different routines, dances, stunts, lifting, tumbling and many more. all star cheerleading is divided into different categories, which depends on the age of the participant, and the skill or level of ability. This should be assessed well so he/she will be put into the correct category.

Also to learn how do perform an elite cheer or all star cheer, there are dedicated and professional coaches that will help the individual learn all she needs to know, and how to apply and perform it afterwards. There is basically three levels into which a participant will be categorized or placed in. Those in level 1 must be able to perform: handstands, cartwheels, forward and backward rolls, walkovers, bridges and bridge kick overs. For those in level 2, they must be able to do some basic standing and running, backwalk over, and back handsprings; and everyone in level 3 must be capable of  tucks, standing and running, but being able to combine it with other routines or steps.

Enrolling in an all star cheerleading team might cost around $30-60 every month, depending on your location. Unlike in school cheering where you don’t need to pay for anything, all star cheerleading needs your money because you will undergo personal training with coaches, who’ll help you prepare and improve not just for a competition, but also help you prepare for a future where you see yourself participating in many different competitions around the country. And you don’t need to wait until you reach high school before you get to train as a cheerleader, because girls of almost all ages will be accepted.

Whichever team you decide to join, make sure you devote a lot of time to it, and be ready to introduce your body into a lot of vigorous activities that will help prepare you for competition. There will come nights when you won’t get enough sleep just to prepare for an event. But that is the life of cheerleaders, and for some whose dream is to be the best cheerleader in the land, it is a fulfilling experience they wouldn’t exchange for anything in the world.
